Planning a trip is less about filling every hour and more about giving the days a shape.
Start with one sentence
Write a single line: where, when, and why. “Two weeks in Japan, in autumn, to walk and eat well.” That sentence will decide more than any spreadsheet.
Then build the bones
- Dates that respect how you actually travel
- A first and last city, so arrivals and departures are calm
- Two or three stays, not twelve
A good itinerary leaves a little air. The best hours on the road are rarely the ones you scheduled.
A small table to begin
| Piece | Question |
|---|---|
| Transport | How do you arrive, and how do you move between cities? |
| Stays | Where will the mornings feel like yours? |
| Days | What is the one thing this trip must hold? |
How detailed should the first version be?
Enough to book the pieces that sell out. Not so much that the trip is already over on paper.
When the skeleton is there, the rest can be gathered slowly — and your Atlas will still be waiting when you come home.
